Example - simple submission task

Last modified by Carina Enke on 16.01.2024

Scenario – Collect homework

You want to collect files from learners. It is important to you that

  • learners cannot view other learners’ files,
  • submission is terminated at a fixed time,
  • you can then perform the assessment by assigning marks and
  • return corrected solutions individually.

Solution

The task course element is a suitable choice for this scenario. One advantage of the task element compared to the folder course element is that participants cannot see who has already submitted files and when. Performing individual assessments and comfortably returning corrections is also possible.

Configuration

To implement this scenario, proceed as follows:

Open configuration steps ...

1

Add course element:

Open the course editor and insert a new task course element into your course.

Please refer to the Add course elements help page for more information on adding course elements.

2

Define sub-elements:

For an easy submission meeting the requirements explained above, you need the following sub-elements:

  • Drop box
  • Return box
  • Assessment

Deactivate all other task elements on the Sub-elements tab and save this setting.

Note: The return box is only necessary if you intend to return individual files to the learners. If an assessment comment is sufficient for your scenario, you can also disable this element.

3

Specify submission period:

Switch to the Access tab and activate the Depending on date access restriction in the Drop box section. Specify the desired submission end time. It is also possible to set a start time for submissions or combine several periods. Save these settings.

Set assessment configurations:

Switch to the Assessment tab and configure the planned assessment type. In this example scenario, we only want to assign marks. Therefore, activate the Mark assigned option. Make sure that the Display passed/failed and Individual comment options are deactivated. Save these settings.

Use these settings to obtain a clearer assessment form later when carrying out the assessment.

Tip

Do you already know about the bulk assessment function? This function allows you to assign marks to all users collectively by using a list. See the Bulk assessment help page for more information on this function. In addition to the bulk assessment, a collective download for the users' solution files is also available. The Download user solutions collectively help page provides instructions on how to proceed.

Other optional configurations:

  • Use the built-in editor to create files: The default configuration allows learners only to upload files created with external tools to the drop box. Alternatively, there is also the option to use a built-in editor to create a file directly in the learning platform. To enable this option, you need to deselect the Trainees are only allowed to upload documents checkbox on the Handing in tab.
  • Deactivate hand in confirmation: By default, the learner receives a confirmation email when successfully uploading a file. This email is sent immediately after the upload. If this is not what you want, deactivate the option on the Handing in tab.
  • Set a time to view assessments or return files: The default configuration gives learners access to the assessment information as soon as they have been assessed. The same applies to files that you place in the learners' drop boxes. If you would like to share this information with all participants simultaneously (rather than one after the other), please set a corresponding date dependency in the Drop box section on the Access tab.

Notes on all other configuration options can be found in the general sections on configuring the Task course element.

Usage notes

Access to the participants’ solution files and assessment forms is only possible if the respective users are registered in a course group. Please make sure that at least one learning group is available in the course and that all learners who are to receive an assessment for this course element are enrolled in this group. Further information is provided on the Learning groups help page.
