Create or import a new topic

Last modified by Carina Enke on 12.08.2024

Before participants can register for a topic, the relevant topic entries must be created. After you have published the course element, you will see the available options for creating topics in the course view: Choose between creating a single topic or importing multiple topics.

If topics have already been created, they are listed in a table. In this case, you will find both functions in the table header.

Create a new topic

To create a single new topic, proceed as follows:

Open the course element Topic Assignment. Click on Create topic in the header of the topic list.

This opens an empty detailed view of a topic. Use this field to enter key information about the new one:

  • Title: Enter a name for the topic or work task.
  • Topic owner: On topic creation, the author is entered as the person responsible for it. This cannot be changed in the creation dialogue. Once the topic has been created, however, you can enter other users as responsible persons by using the detailed view of the topic.
  • Description: You can add explanations on the topic or specify the work assignment.
  • Individual fields: It is possible to create up to five individual fields in the Configuration of the course element topic assignment. They are shown under the description when a topic is created or edited. Depending on the settings, they can be free text fields or a selection list of predefined entries. Select your favourite entry here or fill in the text field.
  • Number of available places: Activate the checkbox and assign the planned maximum number of participants for this topic. Once the maximum number has been reached, no further course participants can enrol in the subject.
  • Enrolment period: If an enrolment date was specified in the configuration of the course element, you can specify a period here. Only within this period can course participants select the subject and enrol for it.
  • Submission period: If a submission date was specified in the configuration of the course element, you can specify a period here. Only within this period can course participants submit files on the selected topic.
  • Attachments: To upload a file for each topic as an attachment, click this button. Course participants can download this file once they open the detailed view of the course element.
  • E-Mail notification (optionally): If this checkbox is activated, all topic owners receive a notification as soon as participants select or deselect this topic or submit a solution to it.

Prepare table

To ensure that you enter all the configured fields for this course element correctly, we recommend using the table template from the dialogue. It will be generated individually for the selected course element. Download this template by clicking on the download table button Icon_Tabellendownload.png in the dialogue. Enter all the required data for the topics that you wish to create.

Responsible person: Please note that the responsible persons have to be entered with their user name and not their first and last name. Some universities use the format ‘user name@institution.de' for this information.

Select all table rows (without the column headings) and copy these contents into the text field of the dialogue and start the import as described above. You will then see all the topics you have created in the topic overview.
