How to use H5P Content in OPAL

Last modified by Carina Enke on 18.01.2024

H5P is an OER software (Open Educational Resources) with which educational materials can be created. The idea for H5P is from the NDLA ("Norwegian Digital Learning Arena"), a government-funded organisation from Norway. The aim was to invent an HTML5 and JavaScript based OER application to create learning content. The resulting HTML files can be opened by any browser. However, H5P content is not exam-proof and should therefore only be used for (non-graded) practice and learning units. To learn more about H5P and content creating tools, see the course pages Create interactive content with H5P.

You can use the following options to integrate H5P content in the learning platform OPAL:

  • Upload H5P content to the learning platform and embed it in HTML pages
  • Embed H5P content from external storage locations in HTML pages
  • Export H5P content as a SCORM resource and use it in the learning platform as SCORM learning content.

Embed an HTML page of an H5P content

Do you have the H5P content as an HTML file? If so, you can upload the file directly to the learning platform. After that, you can integrate the HTML page(s) from the storage folder, for example, via a course element Single page.

  • Export your H5P content. For example, with the Lumi software via the following path: Open the content in Lumi> File> Export> go to export settings and specify them>Export Now>save the HTML files.
  • Upload the HTML file to the course storage folder.
  • Embed the HTML file by using the course element Single page. How this integration of an HTML page works is described under Select, create or upload page. There you can use the section "Select HTML page from course storage folder or copy existing template (option 2)".

Embed H5P content in an HTML page

Do you have the H5P content online? If so, you can embed existing H5P materials from the internet directly into your course. You will find an "Embed" button on the selected material with which a code for embedding is displayed. Use the course element Single page to integrate it into your course. An example can be found here Application example: Embed H5P content.

Embed H5P content as SCORM

Is the H5P content exportable as SCORM? If so, you can use SCORM resources directly in the learning platform. One advantage of this use is the transfer of assessment data from SCORM to the learning platform. For more information, see the course element page SCORM.
