Exam Control
Exam control allows tutors to intervene in the examination process actively: For example, they can start and finish the exam simultaneously for selected examinees or, in the event of an unexpected PC failure, continue the exam or increase the individual processing time.
To ensure the security of the exam if an exam PC fails, the current processing status, processing position, as well as processing and display sequence are saved after each user interaction. With permission of the exam tutor, the examinee can thus continue their examination on another configured PC exactly where they left off.
Configure Exam control
Exam control can be activated in the course editor of the corresponding course element Test in the Test Configuration tab. For more detailed information, see the help page Test. The configuration options are described on the page Exam settings .
Open Exam control
Open the relevant course element Test in the course view. If Exam control has been configured correctly, course tutors will now see the Exam control area directly below the button Start test. Group tutors also have access to Exam control. They can, however, only see users for whom they have supervision rights in the overview.
If you open Exam control, you will find a tabular overview of all enrolled course participants and their current examination status. There are various buttons at the top of the table that provide central functions of Exam control and exam supervision:
You can filter the list of participants in the table according to processing status or group membership.
|
Use the Exam-state column to check the status of the relevant participant. The following can occur:
The learner is waiting to start the exam.
The learner is waiting to continue the exam.
The learner was allowed to continue the exam.
The learner is currently processing the exam.
The learner has finished processing the exam.
The learner has cancelled the exam, or the exam was finished by the tutor when the learner was in the "Waiting for approval" dialogue. No exam results are available.
The learner has not yet entered the exam.
Unfortunately, the status of the learner is currently unknown. This icon will be displayed, for instance, if the test has been continued for a user, although the latter has not actively continued the test even after 10 minutes. |
Additional status information
The learner has been given additional processing time.
The learner has not responded for more than a minute. This means that the client's connection to the server is lost. This situation can be caused by closing the test window or browser, a PC crash, an interrupted internet connection, etc. |
Start, continue, or finish exam
To change the status of one or more participants, activate the checkboxes next to the respective users.
Select the preferred action button, Start or Finish, from above the table.
The examination status displayed within this table is automatically updated on a regular basis. You can see the time of the last update in an information box above the list of participants.
Alternatively, you can manually update the page by clicking on the button |
Add processing time and view the remaining time
Some exams have preconfigured processing times. For those tests, it is possible to individually increase the processing time and display the individual remaining time during the examination.
If a processing time is configured in the test, the button add time appears above the table as well as the column remaining time. If no participant has been selected, the add time button will be inactive. |
|
To give additional processing time to an examinee, tick the checkbox in front of the participant's name. Click on add time now.
This opens a dialogue in which you can enter the time you wish to give more. Click on OK to add it to the user’s remaining time. This addition can be made individually for one or more participants, once or even several times. The dialogue does not open if the user has not yet entered the exam . ) or has already completed it ().
It may take a few seconds for this setting to be synchronised with the ongoing test. Then the participant's displayed remaining time increases as well. The time added last is displayed in the Exam-state column until the status of the test attempt changes. |
|
Any time additions given can be viewed in the assessment tool in the history log. For more information on the history log, see the Result documents help page. |
Add processing time when an exam is continued
If an exam is cancelled, the examinee has the option to continue the exam upon approval of an exam tutor.
The exam was cancelled. In the meantime, the examinee has logged back into the system and is given the opportunity to continue the exam. | Course view of the examinee:
|
Clicking on the Continue button opens the exam approval dialogue. This dialogue remains open until an exam tutor has approved the exam to continue. | Approval dialogue from the examinee's perspective: |
As soon as the examinee selects the Continue exam button, the request for approval will be visible in Exam control with the next page update. | Exam control from the examiner's perspective: |
Grant approval and add processing time for time-limited exams
To grant approval, activate the checkbox for the relevant participant in the table row. Then click on the Start button in the table header.
The Continue exam dialogue opens. For time-limited tests, you can compensate for the time that has elapsed since the interruption here.
| ||
Confirm your entry with OK. The added time will be briefly displayed in Exam control and only then can the examinee continue to work on the exam again.
After that, the exam starts automatically for this examinee. |
Refuse approval and finish the exam attempt
To finish an exam attempt, activate the checkbox for the relevant participant in the table row.
Now click on Finish above the table.
The attempt will end automatically and the participant will be informed. |
Send messages to participants
To send notices to one or more participants during the exam, proceed as follows:
Activate the checkbox of the relevant examinees and click on messages.
This opens a dialogue in which you enter the notice that you want to give to your examinees. If you click on Send now, your message will be sent to all selected participants.
They will see it directly in the exam and only by clicking Confirm and Close can they continue with their exam.
The bubble symbol in the Notices column shows which examinees have been sent a message. The colour of the icon indicates the current status: If the icon is coloured green, the examinee has confirmed to have received the message.
All notices displayed to and confirmed by an examinee can be viewed in the history log in the assessment tool after completion of the exam. More information on the history log can be found here Result documents. |
Exam information
From this column, you can access various participant documents. These documents are only available if appropriate configurations have been made. They can only be found at this location and only for a limited time – usually for the current day.
Display assessment summary (exam.pdf) | Click on this icon to download the assessment summary (exam.pdf). In addition to the assessment summary, the exam summary is also permanently available in the assessment tool. For more information on central exam documents, have a look at Exams in ONYX and Assessment tool.
Print confirmation page | With this icon, you can open a dialogue that displays the content of the confirmation page and allows you to print this page. The confirmation page contains the following information: Last name, first name, exam title, date and checksum. Configure this function for a course element test in exam mode by enabling the Exam needs confirmation before submission option. More information on this can be found here Exam settings. |
Use both documents in the exam workflow: Upon submitting the test, the participant can be displayed the individual exam confirmation, including the associated exam summary. The exam confirmation to be signed by the participant then only contains the checksum. By signing the exam confirmation with checksum, the participant confirms the content of the associated document, i.e. the exam summary, and thus their test questions and answers.
